Grammar Matters

This blast from the past is an encore presentation c. 2009.

Recently, I was chatting with my good friend Patti about how we were all looking forward to the warmer weather, the good times, the get-togethers, the special times spent chatting around the pool.
Upon hearing this Kassie interjected, breezily, Yeah and you moms can sit around and enjoy your marijuana!"

Quizzing her immediately on what EXACTLY she was talking about and how did she, little missy, even know of such things she shrugged, sheepish, and said you know mommy. Those drinks with the umbrellas?

Ahhh MARGARITAS.

Mystery Solved.
Cheers!

Geneva-on-the-Lake 2012

 No Shade App?

People may be surprised to learn that Ohio has gorgeous, white sand beaches.

The Strip at night. Very Honky-Tonk Boardwalk. Excellent Food. Not a bit of it good for you, but you don't go there for THAT.

What goes great with wine? Elmo.

I don't think we ate indoors the entire three days we were there.

White Turkey Drive Inn, Conneaut, Ohio. How did that sneak in there? Road trip!

True Confession: I will ride any roller coaster known to man but I am scared to screaming, white-knuckled DEATH of Ferris Wheels. Just say no.

Pretty though.

Quiet Time

Kassie's leg. On the upside she and her brother (Matt) have been peaceful all afternoon. Proof that no matter how old they are if it gets too quiet they are probably drawing on something.

Special thanks to all the villagers (you know who you are) who make life just a little bit easier, happier, and funnier every day.

Blast from the past ... Why My Son Will Need Therapy Edition

Better mothers run for an ice pack. I grab the camera.

Description: Hammocks are tricky. Oh sure they act all sweet and innocent, lulling you into a sense of relaxation, but that s just a ruse to lower your defenses. One moment you are swaying happily ~ sure it’s a little too high but it’s not like your mom knows anything when she cautions you about that. Nope, one minute you are swinging away, ~enjoying the breeze and catching the sky. Then WHAM! You are doing a face plant on the downswing - straight into the dirt. Fortunately you aren’t too badly hurt. Unfortunately, you broke your fall with your mouth. Ouch! Cousin Elizabeth did render some first aid in the form of good cheer. As you lay prone on a lawn chair, ice bag pressed to your bloody, swollen, and altogether shredded lip, she leaned over you gently and said “let me see it buddy ....” only to jump back about a foot and scream “OhMyGosh That’s HORRIBLE!” when you did (and then WE laughed ~ even though you didn’t). Glad to see you healed up nicely buddy. Just always remember that there’s a reason you should listen to the things your mother warns you about. Oh, and I’m telling you ~ hammocks are not to be trusted.

Here is the table I nearly destroyed via my overconfident incompetence. Nonetheless it is important to note that every decor item shown ranges in price from Free-$1 in cost because I'm spendy like that.

The Perfect Photo Shoot in 10,011 Billion Easy Steps

Every year I set out to take a series of portraits of my children. I did this after I hauled them out to a professional photographer to the tune of hundreds of dollars, thousands of tears (mostly mine) and the dawning realization that they would be more relaxed and easier to photograph at home.
This year was no different.
I pride myself on the compliments I receive for how beautifully the annual portraits turn out (if I do say so myself – and I do). That said, I think it’s time to tell the truth behind the perfect portrait. Things aren’t always what they seem.
Or, as I like to call it, How to get the perfect portrait in 10,011 Billion Easy Steps – with just a hint of child abuse and threat thrown in for good measure.

Then we will have some animal involvement, to whit:

More “me and my ball!”
Moves like Jagger! Awesome Tazmanian Devil impression. I'm a whirling dervish!
“Moves Like Jagger” indeed! Maroon5’s got nothin’ on him …

There may be goats … Penny and Billy are ready for their close-ups. Well, not Billy. Billy is busy being highly suspicious of the camera …
Finally, after endless takes, out-takes, and begging we might, God willing, end up with something like this:

And every year I say it again, it’s worth every single second … and then some.

Don't Cry Because It's Over,

Don't Cry Because It's Over, Smile Because It Happened.

(Easier said than done as we complete our magical year plus with the Best Team Ever and our daughter "retires" from the Under 12 League).

BCSC Rapids Players and families - you know who you are and you know we love you, each and every one!
This is a happy picture but I think it will always make me want to cry.
Will miss seeing these happy faces every week.
May the world always be kind and always bless and know how special these kids are.

Heirloom Cookies

I have the best in-laws in the world. Truly. They have all but robbed me of any great joke or column possibilities, mainly through being so decent and NICE. Still, THAT comes in handy too sometimes. Witness my sister-in-law, Kim (the original "Kim Seabolt" who wisely married and changed her last name once she realized I was going to be mucking about with it) as she bravely teaches Wondergirl how to make a beloved family recipe: orange cookies. Aunt Kim arrived, ingredients in tow (and a brand new food processor for Kassie to boot!) and walked her through the steps involved to make "Grandma Ollie's Orange Drops." A 65+ year old recipe. Aunt Kim also included a framed version of the recipe (love!) and a brand new cookbook just for Kassie - with the heirloom family recipes written in, and many blank pages just begging to be filled.
